In my experience, the best investors, coaches, and leaders across all walks of life are those that focus on building things that last. This means building portfolios, teams, businesses, and institutions capable of thriving during the good times and enduring during the bad. The cross discipline lessons from these people are countless.
“A Program That Lasts” is a reference to UVA Men’s Basketball head coach Tony Bennett’s introductory press conference. When asked why he chose UVA, he answered, “I came here to build a program that lasts and I think the way you go about that is you have great integrity and you have great passion”. In the years since taking the helm, Bennett has built a program on these two pillars — integrity and passion — characteristics that are essential in building anything that is successful over long periods of time.
Bennett’s program has also gone against the grain by not relying on “one and done” players, has been built around a disciplined defense, and has endured some of the highest highs and lowest lows. The results speak for themselves. Five ACC titles, eight NCAA tournaments, three Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights, and one National Championship. Maybe most importantly, that elusive national championship came the year after becoming the first #1 seed in history to lose in the first round. The definition of resilience. Or in his words,
“If you learn to use it right, the adversity, it will buy you a ticket to a place you could not have gone any other way.”
